2 kids dead, 2 others hurt when tube they played with exploded
PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur—Two children died while two others were wounded in an explosion Friday in Kumalarang town, Zamboanga del Sur.
Colonel Jomarie Albarico, Zamboanga del Sur police director, identified the two fatalities as Johnkin Gregorio, 8, and John Leo Soco Miro, 6. The two wounded are Rhea Fe Pucolan, 13, and John Michael Miro, 8. Both were rushed to the Zamboanga del Sur Medical Center in this city.
A police investigation showed that the children were playing with a rusty tube that turned out to be a rifle grenade, although investigators found this out only after the blast.
Kumalarang Mayor Ruel Molina said the incident happened around 12:30 p.m. inside the house of Fe Calunsag Poculan in Purok Malipayon of Barangay Diplo.
“We were informed the father of the Miro kids found unexploded ordnance, a tube for the rifle grenade from Diplo River. He brought it home and cut it, then disposed of the other half. Unfortunately, the kids found the said tube and played with it,” Molina said.
