MANILA, Philippines — The alleged leader of a drug ring and his accomplice were arrested by police officers and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) agents during a bust that also led to the discovery of a clandestine shabu (crystal meth) laboratory inside a subdivision in Dasmariñas, Cavite.

Also seized during the bust were 60 kilos of shabu worth P408 million, a butane stove, assorted equipment used to make the shabu, containers containing unknown chemicals, various drug paraphernalia, and an air purifier which according to the PDEA, was used by the suspects to mask odors coming from the laboratory.

“We have caught a big fish engaged in illegal drug activity,” Danao said in a statement. “With their arrest, we will soon be given a clearer picture of their network of transactions.”

The PDEA said prior to the raid, it received reports from concerned citizens who suspected  that the house inside the subdivision was being used for illegal drug activity since the “occupants were not seen during day time and only stayed there for a short while during midnight and wee hours.”

PDEA spokesperson Derrick Carreon said the discovery of the clandestine shabu lab was “incidental during the buy-bust” operation.

“PDEA conducted a validation, and indeed the one room of the house is being used as a drug den, another room as a stash house and a small scale clandestine lab due to the presence of residues found in the equipment, various chemicals and [more or less] 60 kilograms of drugs,” the PDEA said in another report.

The arrested suspects will be facing complaints for violations of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
