Local absentee voting starts

MANILA, Philippines — A total of 84,357 soldiers, police officers, government personnel, and media whose applications for local absentee voting were approved by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) can cast their votes from April 27 to April 29.
Among those who will cast their votes early for the May 9 polls because they will be on duty on Election Day are Comelec Chair Saidamen Pangarungan, Commissioner Aimee Torrefranca-Neri, and over 1,000 other personnel of the poll body.
Like their overseas counterparts, local absentee voters can vote only for national positions, namely president, vice president, 12 senators, and a party list group.
Instead of automated election ballots, they will be asked to write down their choices on ballots given to them either by their supervisors or a Comelec official at the office where they registered as absentee voters.
The votes will be canvassed at the Comelec main office in Intramuros, Manila, after polling precincts close on May 9 at 7 p.m.
A total 93,698 government and media personnel applied for local absentee voting with 9,341 applications denied by Comelec.
