Davao City authorities warn vs possible COVID-19 surge

DAVAO CITY, Davao del Sur, Philippines — As economic activities in the city go full stream, the city government has cautioned residents to brace for another surge in COVID-19 cases before the end of the first semester.
Dr. Michelle Schlosser, the city’s COVID-19 Task Force spokesperson, said the anticipated surge in cases might take place within May or June as more people reverted back to their usual activities before the pandemic, mostly without social distancing, a factor that could contribute to a possible rise in COVID-19 infection.
“We already have an open policy because movement of everyone similar to the pre-pandemic [level] is allowed. The number of people in an establishment [might be huge] because there is no imposition anymore of social distancing,” Schlosser said.
The Department of Health (DOH) in the Davao Region has stopped reporting the daily number of COVID-19 cases since a week ago after the DOH central office announced it would only do a weekly tracking.
