MANILA, Philippines — Smartphones and gadgets of all Philippine National Police personnel would be checked to ensure they were not “addicted” to online cockfights or “e-sabong.”

Gen. Dionardo Carlos, chief of the PNP, ordered on Monday all cops to avoid or stop patronizing e-sabong after a police officer assigned in Camp Crame was caught in the act of gambling while on duty.

Carlos issued the directive amid a Senate inquiry into some 30 missing sabungeros, who were allegedly abducted and remain unaccounted for.

On Monday’s flagraising rites the PNP chief cited the senators’ view on the social cost of gambling.

“As PNP chief, I am prohibiting you … from playing e-sabong or online sabong. Yesterday (Sunday) our chief of the directorial staff himself (Police Maj. Gen. Rhodel Sermonia) caught one inside camp. My golly,” Carlos said.

“That is an addiction. If you are into that we will make sure that you are stopped,” he said.

“Henceforth all field offices, commanders, units, we will inspect all cell phones and other gadgets that may be used [for online sabong],” he said.
