Senate probes alleged leak in Corona bank records

MANILA, Philippines – The Senate on Monday began its investigation into the alleged leak of bank records in the name of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Officials of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and Anti Money-Laundering Council (AMLC) attended the investigation by the committee on banks, financial institutions & currencies headed by Senator Serge Osmena III.

The inquiry was prompted by revelations in the trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona where Corona himself was one of those considered as a politically exposed person or PEP and was therefore subjected to audit by the BSP and the AMLC in September 2011.

The note “PEP” was found in the documents attached by the prosecution team which they submitted to the Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, when they sought to subpoena bank officials and records in relation to alleged accounts owned by the Chief Justice.
