Roque on Robredo’s presidential run: ‘It’s every right of a Filipino’

MANILA, Philippines — “It’s every right of a Filipino to stand for public office.”

This was presidential spokesperson Harry Roque’s statement on Thursday when asked for his reaction to Vice President Leni Robredo’s announcement to run for president in the 2022 elections.

Early Thursday, Robredo finalized her decision to fight in next year’s polls to end the sufferings of Filipinos.

Meantime, despite the nearing end of the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC), Roque said that he and President Rodrigo Duterte are still hoping for the latter’s daughter Sara to run for the highest position in the country.

“Sa ngayon po hindi ko alam kasi pareho kami ni presidente that (As of now, I don’t know because both the president and I), we are hoping that Sara Duterte would still run for president,” Roque responded during the Palace briefing when inquired who the chief executive will support and what the chances are of a Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Senator Christopher Go tandem.

Marcos, a former senator, and son of his namesake late dictator and former president, filed a COC for president on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Go formalized his bid for the vice-presidential race on Saturday.

Sara, on the other hand, lodged her candidacy on Saturday for reelection as Davao City mayor.

The COC filing is set to end on Friday.
