PH logs 118 more deaths; total now 33,448

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) reported 118 more deaths on Tuesday, raising the country’s death toll to 33,448 fatalities as the government battles a new surge of cases due to the Delta variant.

According to DOH, the country reported an average of 114 deaths per day from August 1 to 30, higher than the 97 average deaths in July, 106 in June, and 124 in May.

The country reached its peak of COVID-19 deaths at 135 average fatalities per day in April when the country also saw a surge in cases.

Deaths triggered by COVID-19 are increasing in August, the DOH earlier confirmed, but the proportion of fatalities among the confirmed cases this year is not higher than last year despite more cases now being recorded.

The country has so far confirmed 1.98 million confirmed COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday, of which 145,562 remain active. Of the active cases, 1.1 percent are severe and 0.6 percent are critical that are at higher risk for death.

Meanwhile, 95.9 percent of the active cases are mild, 1.4 percent are asymptomatic, and 0.99 percent are moderate cases.
