MANILA, Philippines — The driver of the pickup truck that struck and killed a 23-year-old nurse in a hit-and-run accident on Aug. 23 finally surrendered on Thursday afternoon to Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso.

Muhammad Ali Sulaiman asked for forgiveness from the family of Renz Jayson Perez, saying he “did not surface immediately because I was overwhelmed with fear and I sought someone who can help me with this. I hope you can forgive me for the sin I did.”

Domagoso instructed the suspect to extend assistance to Perez’s family but the victim’s father, Ricardo, who was also at City Hall, said they would not accept any money.

“It’s very easy to ask for forgiveness. We will see each other in court,” Ricardo said.

“He might be stricken by his conscience. Finally, our prayers had an effect on him, what he did to my son was not an accident. He really killed my son. My son was underneath; he was still alive but he ran over him,” Ricardo added. —(Jodee A. Agoncillo)
