Phivolcs records 46 volcanic quakes around Mt. Bulusan

LEGAZPI CITY –– More volcanic earthquakes were observed in Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon province during the past 24 hours.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) logged 46 volcanic earthquakes in the volcano, an 8 a.m. bulletin from the agency said.

On Tuesday, the agency registered 27 quakes.

Aside from jolts, Phivolcs also recorded weak and shallow hydrothermal or magmatic gas activity within the edifice of the volcano.

White steam-laden plumes from the lower southeast vent were also seen.

These indicate that volcanic processes are underway beneath the edifice that may be caused by deep-seated degassing or hydrothermal activity or magmatic intrusion.

From July 3 to 6, Phivolcs recorded 53 volcanic quakes in Mt. Bulusan. On July 6, Phivolcs raised Mt. Bulusan’s alert level to 1, which signals an abnormal status.
