9 dead, 4,000 downed by dengue in Eastern Visayas since January

TACLOBAN CITY –– At least nine people died while more than 4,000 others were afflicted by dengue fever in Eastern Visayas since January 2020.

A Department of Health in Eastern Visayas (DOH-8) report showed that Leyte province has the most number of deaths, with five, followed by Eastern Samar. with three, and Samar province, with one.

The total number of dengue fever cases in the region from January 1 to July 4 reached 4,133.

Leyte province has the highest number of dengue fever cases (2,142), followed by Southern Leyte (541), Samar (516), Biliran (400), Northern Samar (269), and Eastern Samar (265).

Dr. Minerva Molon, director of DOH-8, earlier said that while they were grappling with the rising number of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in Eastern Visayas, they were also monitoring other diseases like dengue fever.

She appealed to the public to always clean their surroundings and houses to ward off dengue fever.

Eastern Visayas has also been one of the regions in the country where COVID-19 cases are rising.

At present, the region has 646 COVID-19 cases with three deaths.
