Gov’t to push for women empowerment as PH marks Int’l Women’s Month — Palace
MANILA, Philippines — In commemoration of International Women’s Month this March, Malacañang on Tuesday promised that the government will continue with its efforts to push for women empowerment as it also recognizes the contributions of women to the country’s growth.
In a statement, Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo hailed the contributions of Filipino women to the country’s political, social and economic sectors.
“We cannot quantify the contributions of Filipinas in the political, social and economic growth of the Philippines. This month-long celebration, therefore, underscores the recognition our country places to women in the family, community, and nation,” Panelo said.
But Panelo also admits that more changes are needed to uphold gender equality despite efforts by the Duterte administration to push for women empowerment.
“The Duterte administration has made significant strides to empower our women. Some of these are giving them more financial, health and medical benefits or assistance, better work opportunities and improved working conditions,” Panelo said.
“There are, however, changes that still need to be implemented to further empower the Filipinas of today, as well as to encourage an environment where substantive equality thrives,” he noted.
“Hence, we urge each one to help one another to motivate Filipinas in reaching their full potential, especially in nation-building. This government will continue its advocacy for women’s rights and women empowerment,” Panelo further said.
International Women’s Day is celebrated every March 8th of each year. It was officially commemorated by the United Nations in 1977.
