Why too much alcohol for the New Year can also be bad

MANILA, Philippines — It seems that injuries during the New Year are not all fireworks or gun-related. There are those caused by too much drinking as well as records from the East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) showed during Saturday night’s celebrations to usher in 2012.

From 12 midnight up to 3 a.m. of January 1, at least 32 people were brought to the hospital suffering from stab wounds after being mauled by a drunk or drunks.

Majority of these cases occurred during drinking sessions, based on accounts by relatives or companions of the victims.

Doctor Emmanuel Bueno, chief of the EAMC trauma center, said that injuries from fights and brawls between people who were drunk were common during celebrations like New Year.

He added that there was a previous case where a person was struck with an arrow after a drinking spree.

Meanwhile, injuries caused by firecrackers have risen to 70.
