Boy gets two fingers amputated after firecracker injury

MANILA, Philippines — A 13-year-old boy from Aliasa, Nueva Ecija needed to have two of his fingers amputated after being injured by an illegal firework called cylinder, the Department of Health (DOH) said Monday.

A report by the DOH said the boy, who was not identified, had his fifth and ring finger amputated. He was taken to the Dr. Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research and Medical Center in Cabanatuan.

Meanwhile, the number of recorded firework-related injuries has already reached 54, four cases or eight percent higher than the same period in 2018.

The injuries were all due to fireworks. No stray bullet injuries or firework ingestion cases have been reported, however. There also have been no deaths.

DOH said most of the injuries reported were from the National Capital Region (NCR) with 21, followed by Regions I and VI with six each.
