MANILA, Philippines — The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said Tuesday that it is currently investigating the case of 16 policemen guarding the New Bilibid Prison (NBP), after they were caught reportedly smuggling contraband inside the national penitentiary.

The NCRPO noted that its Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division (RIDMD) ordered the police officers to submit their counter-affidavit until Wednesday (October 23) in response to the allegations.

“They were ordered to submit their respective counter-affidavit until Wednesday of this week to shed light on the issue at hand,” read the statement.

The RIDMD is expected to release its final evaluation on the case this Friday (October 25).

NCRPO acting chief Brig. Gen. Debold Sinas, however, refused to disclose the identity of the policemen while the investigation is ongoing.

The accused policemen, who were formerly assigned at the NCRPO-Regional Mobile Force Company to secure NBP’s Maximum Security Compound, were transferred to the NCRPO’s Regional Holding and Accounting.

The NCRPO said confiscated from the uniformed personnel were liquor, gadgets and tobacco leaves.

This incident prompted Sinas to replace NCRPO policemen deployed at the national penitentiary every month to avoid corruption and possible bribery from inmates. /jpv
