DID YOU KNOW: 106th birth anniversary of Gerry de Leon

Today, Sept. 12, is the 106th birth anniversary of National Artist for Cinema Gerardo “Gerry” de Leon.

In high school, De Leon played the piano to accompany the silent films that were being shown at Cine Moderno in Quiapo.

Despite finishing medicine, the lure of the cinema was stronger.

He made his directorial debut with “Ama’t Anak” and his biggest prewar hit was “Ang Maestra.”

FEATURED STORIES

His other known films included “Daigdig ng mga Api,” “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo.”
