6-year-old girl with leukemia needs P44,000 for last chemo, tests

Shara Shane Sangalang

Shara Shane Sangalang has been on medication since 2016 when she was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia, leaving her body bloated.

“Doctors have told us not to worry because it is supposed to be a natural reaction every time a patient takes Prednisone and Dexa. When she stops taking it, her body will go back to its normal weight,” her mother, Roschel, said.

After undergoing 11 sessions of chemotherapy for over two years at Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) in Quezon City, Sangalang, now 6 years old, is back in their hometown of Candaba, Pampanga.

While seeking treatment, she and her mother stayed at a shelter in Paco, Manila, so that they could go to the hospital every day to monitor her blood count.

According to doctors, the treatment has normalized the level of red blood cells in Sangalang’s body.

“She will have her 12th session on Nov. 23 after which she will undergo bone marrow, CT Scan and 2D Echo tests to detect whether the cancer cells have been eradicated,” said Roschel, who is married to a truck driver. The couple has four children.
