San Beda College granted university status

San Beda announced that it is now known as San Beda University, after the Commission on Higher Education approved its application to university status.

CHED Memorandum Order No. 48, Series of 1996 states that “university status, being a distinctive honor, shall be reserved only for the truly deserving HEIs in the country which have proven their excellence in the areas of instruction, research and extension.”

Level III accreditation for at least four undergraduate programs and two graduate programs is required.

Among faculty, 50 percent must be full-time and 20 percent must have doctoral degrees in their specialization while 35 percent must have master’s degrees.

Faculty members must also be published in “referred journals” under a “dynamic research program” with a “track record of not less than three years.”

The Catholic university was founded in 1901 by Benedictine monks.

Alumni include President Rodrigo Duterte and Senator Leila de Lima, who both graduated from the school’s College of Law. JB
