Bills expanding crop insurance coverage OKd

The House of Representatives approved on final reading two measures seeking to strengthen the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. (PCIC) and extend crop insurance to beneficiaries of the land reform program.

House Bills (HBs) No. 6686 and 6923 were both passed on Monday with 197 votes and zero rejections or abstentions.

HB 6686 sought to provide immediate financial assistance to agrarian reform beneficiaries to make losses more bearable.

HB 6923 sought to expand coverage of the PCIC to corn, high-value commercial crops, livestock, aquaculture, agroforestry and forest plantations. —Vince F. Nonato
