On Dec. 14, 1897, the Pact of Biak-na-Bato was signed by the Spanish government and Philippine revolutionaries. The pact temporarily halted hostilities and promised certain reforms, including representation in the Spanish court, the relief of the friars and payment of P800,000 should Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo and other revolutionary leaders go on voluntary exile to Hong Kong. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
