LAOAG CITY — A 51-year-old woman died in an explosion that injured her husband at their home in Barangay (village) 22 on Thursday morning, police said.

A witness saw Noemi Fiesta holding a box at their porch when it blew up, killing her instantly. The blast hurt Fieta’s husband, tricycle-driver Cresencio, who was a few steps away from her.

The blast shocked neighbors who were preparing breakfast.

Supt. Edwin Balles, Laoag police chief, said fragments recovered at the crime scene indicated that the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device placed inside a bottle.

The police are investigating their part in a land dispute, which may have led to the attack. /je
