Truck kills woman, injures 2 others in Vizcaya

BAYOMBONG, NUEVA VIZCAYA—A woman was killed when a trailer truck went wayward after running over a bump on the road in Bagabag town here on Friday morning.

Police investigators said victim Joan Mendez, 31, was sweeping the front yard of the St. Claire Net Cafe, a local computer rental shop, when the trailer truck driven by Bernard Fontanilla, 26, drove straight toward her at 6:40 a.m. before smashing into the shop and the adjoining house.

Police said Mendez was killed instantly.

Fontanilla and house owner Lilia Gonzales, who was pinned inside her home, were rushed to a nearby hospital in Bascaran village.

“We are looking at the possibility that the uneven pavement may have caused the driver to lose control,” said Chief Insp. Ferdinand Laudencia, Bagabag police chief.

He said truck swerved to the side of the national road when it ran over a hump along Barangay (village) Tapaya.

The wrinkled asphalt pavement at the accident site has been the subject of complaints from motorists for quite a long time now.  JPV
