TAGUM CITY – A miner died while 11 others were injured in a vehicular accident near the mining site of Apex Mining Co. in Maco, Compostela Valley on Monday.
A report from Compostela Valley police office identified the fatality as Jordan Cardenas.
Police said the accident happened as a mini-bus carrying miners hit the side of a hill in Masara village around 7 a.m.
The miners, numbering around 20, had just finished their shift and were on their way home when the accident happened.
One of the injured victims, Juber Rusti, said the mini-bus apparently lost its brakes, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The rented vehicle hit on the side of a hill, narrowly missing a deep ravine, witnesses told authorities.
At least 12 of the passengers were rushed to a private hospital in Tagum after sustaining injuries, but doctors said Cardenas had died upon arrival.
