Series of small quakes ensue at Mt. Province

BAGUIO CITY—A magnitude 3.6 earthquake rocked Mt. Province at 2:53 a.m. on Saturday, which was followed by weaker tremors in nearby areas.

The series of aftershocks did not leave any damage or casualty, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported here.

The quake was tectonic in origin and the shift was detected 11 kilometers from beneath the surface.

A weaker quake, registering at a magnitude 2.2, struck Tubo town in Abra province at 3:30 a.m.

A magnitude 2.1 quake also struck Mt. Province again, this time at 6:29 a.m. in Besao town. Some residents in Mt. Province said they were sleeping and did not feel the ground shake.

The tremor occurred eight days before the 27th commemoration of the July 16, 1990 Luzon earthquake which devastated Baguio City.

Baguio is about 155 kilometers from Mt. Province capital town, Bontoc, which the Phivolcs described as the epicenter of the latest quake. JPV
