CARRETA CHAPEL CONSTRUCTION

CEBU City Mayor Michael Rama ordered a halt on the construction of a chapel in barangay Carreta after builders failed to secure permits from the Office of the Building Officials.

Barangay captain Eduardo Lauron said he was informed by the contractor that personnel of the Squatters Prevention Elimination and Encroachment Division (Speed) told them to stop the construction upon the mayor;’s order.

Speed confirmed that Mayor Rama issued the order as the chapel might cause road obstruction.

Rep. Tomas Osmeña of Cebu City’s south district said he donated money to cover part of the construction expenses.

He explained that he wanted to help the barangay because it will be celebrating its annual fiesta soon./Correspondent KATREENA BISNAR

MENINGOCOCEMIA IN MANDAUE

ANOTHER death caused by meningococcemia was recorded in Mandaue City.

Dr. Edna Seno, Mandaue City Health officer, confirmed that a one-year-old from Mandaue died last Thursday of meningococcemia after being confined overnight in Perpetual Succor Hospital.

Seno said they have taken all the necessary precautions to protect the victim’s family from getting infected

“We already informed the residents of the place and fortunately, the victim’s family are very cooperative in helping us,” Seno said.

The boy’s body was cremated.

Seno said they could not determine how the boy contracted the virus. His family did not travel recently.

Meningococcemia is a bacterial infection that affects a person’s upper respiratory tract without signs of illness. It is common during the wet season.

Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, nausea and rashes with red or purple spots.

MANDAUE TRAFFIC ENFORCER ARREST

FOR collecting garbage at a fast-food chain without a permit, an employee of the Cebu City Solid Waste Management was arrested last Thursday evening in barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City.

Jason Claros is a job-order employee of the Cebu City Solid Waste Managament team who moonlights as a driver.

Allegedly using the L300 van he was driving, he collected garbage of a fast-food chain in Ouano Avenue, Mandaue City.

Geraldo Silvano of the Mandaue Solid Waste Management called his attention and asked if he has a permit to collect the garbage.

Since he has none, he was brought to Subangdaku police precinct by Plarido Jerusalem, head of the city’s Solid Waste Management team.

The police fined Claros P5,000 for violating Section 1 of the Ecological Solid Waste Ordinance of the city.

Juanito Ignacio, brother of Inayawan barangay captain Rustom Ignacio and owner of the L300 van, went to the police precinct at 3 a.m. yesterday to apologize./Reporter Jucell Marie Cuyos
