LUCENA CITY – A surrendered drug user is now in critical condition after he was shot inside his house in the island town of Burdeos in Quezon province on Monday, police said Tuesday.

In a report, Insp. Ferdinand Bondad, Burdeos police chief, said three unidentified armed suspects wearing camouflage uniform barged inside the bedroom of Ruel Peñamante, 42, in the town proper at around 8 p.m. and shot him several times.

The victim sustained gunshot wounds on his left cheek, mouth, right arm and left portion of his back. After receiving emergency treatment, the victim was brought to the Quezon Medical Center in Lucena City.

Bondad denied that the suspects were members of the military and police. “They only wore camouflage uniform to mislead the investigators,” he said in a phone interview.

He said the victim was a former drug user who surrendered to the police during the initial stage of the government’s drug war.

“The shooting was not drug related. The investigators were studying vengeance as the possible motive,” Bondad said.

He said the victim was involved in a killing incident several years ago. CDG
