5 dead, 3 hurt in Quezon road accidents

LUCENA CITY – Five people were killed and three were hurt in three vehicular accidents in Quezon province on Thursday and Friday, police said Saturday.

Police said couple Zosimo, 50, and Venia Zamora, 46, of Lopez town, were on a motorcycle when a Bicol-bound Silver Star Bus bumped them from behind and consequently ran over them along the Maharlika Highway in Barangay Pansol, Lopez town, at about 1:50 a.m., Friday.

Venia died on the spot while Zosimo succumbed after the amputation of his right leg at the Magsaysay District Hospital. The bus driver escaped after the accident, police said.

Police said the victims were not wearing helmets as mandated by Republic Act No. 10054 or the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009.

In Candelaria town, another helmetless motorcycle backrider, Riza Valencia, 33, was killed while driver, Alberto Rosales, 58, was seriously injured in an accident along the San Juan,
Batangas-Candelaria road in Barangay Malabanban Sur on Thursday at about 8:30 p.m. Valencia died while being treated at United Candelaria Doctors Hospital.

Police said the victims were hit from behind by a passenger jeepney.
The still unidentified driver fled after the incident.

In Calauag town, Chief Insp. Michael Encio, Calauag police chief, said jeepney driver Christopher Camacho and his helper Ferdinand de la Cruz were killed while two other passengers were hurt when their vehicle hit the rear of a ten-wheeler cargo truck.

Both vehicles were negotiating a descending curved portion of the Maharlika Highway in Barangay Lungib on Thursday dawn when the accident occurred.
