9 hurt in bus-truck collision in Quezon

LUCENA CITY—Nine people were injured after a cargo truck accidentally lost its brakes and slammed into a passenger bus in Atimonan town in Quezon province early Thursday, police said.

Senior Supt. Rhoderick Armamento, Quezon police director, said the accident that involved an Amihan Bus being driven by Michael Peña and an Isuzu 10-wheeler cargo truck being driven by Diony Gerero occurred in Barangay (village) Malinao Ilaya around 3 a.m.

Police said eight of the bus passengers and the truck helper sustained minor injuries and were brought by rescuers to Doña Marta District Hospital in Atimonan for medical attention.

Reports said that as the Bicol-bound cargo truck was negotiating a curve on a descending portion of the diversion road, its driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle due to faulty brakes. The truck consequently rested on its left side and skidded towards the opposite lane and slammed into the incoming Manila-bound passenger bus. RAM/rga
