Mayol gets new opponent
RODEL Mayol of Mandaue City will face American Ernie Marquez today, instead of Mexican and former world title challenger Luis Maldonado who withdrew from the non-title bout.
The Mayol-Marquez battle will be held at the San Manuel Indian Casino in Highland, California.
The 30-year-old Mayol (29W-5L-2D, 21 KOs) will meet the 29-year-old Marquez (9W-8L-2D, 3 KOs) at the heavier superflyweight division.
Mayol, who is now based in Los Angeles, California, has won three straight fights since losing his WBC light flyweight world title to Mexico’s Omar Nino Romero. Marquez lost a split decision to Richie Mepranum of Sarangani in 2009.
Mepranum (24W-2L-1D, 5 KOs) is also fighting in this card against Rigoberto Casillas (2W-5L-1D, 1 KO) of Mexico while Bernabe Concepcion (28W-5L-1D, 15 KOs)of Binangonan, Rizal will face Aaron Garcia(10W-2L-2D, 2 KOs) of the US.
Garcia is trained by Vince Parra, who also handles Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta, another Mandaue City boxer now based in California. Concepcion will try to bounce back from back-to-back losses to Juan Manuel Lopez and Juan Carlos Martinez. /Correspondent Rene Bonsubre Jr.
