DID YOU KNOW: National Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty

In 1993, then President Fidel Ramos signed Proclamation No. 269 declaring Oct. 17 National Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty. He unveiled at Rizal Park a replica of the Commemorative Stone in Honor of the Victims of Extreme Poverty. On Oct. 18, 2004, then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed Proclamation No. 717 declaring Oct. 17 to 23 of every year as National Week for Overcoming Extreme Poverty and making the National Anti-Poverty Commission in charge of the commemoration of the event. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
