LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines—A village chief in Donsol town in Sorsogon province was shot and killed by a suspected drug user on Sunday, reports reaching the Bicol regional police here said.

Senior Insp. Maria Luisa Calubaquib, regional police spokesperson, said Joel Briones, 47, village chief of Tinagonan, was sitting in front of a sari-sari (variety) store in the village at 5:45 p.m. when the suspect, Edgardo Magtibay (also known as Edgar Garcia), shot him. Briones died instantly.

Calubaquib said the suspect, who recently surrendered to the police in the government’s antidrug campaign, might have been motivated by revenge because Briones was among local officials active in the campaign that targeted suspected drug pushers and users in their community.
