Suspected drug pusher shoots cop, evades arrest

CEBU CITY—A policeman was wounded after he was shot by a suspected drug pusher during a buy bust operation on Friday morning in Danao City, 48 kilometers north of this city.

 
PO2 Francis Hermita of the city’s Anti-City Illegal Drug Unit suffered two bullet wounds in the left arm.

 
The suspect, Ariel Cababan, who was on the list of drug personalities in Danao, managed to escape.

The police, however, were able to arrest, Ruth Hermoso, Cababan’s common-law wife who was believed to be the suspect’s partner in the illegal drugs trade.

PO2 Ronald Gomez, desk officer for Danao City Police Station, said Cababan was sitting outside his house in Barangay (village) Guinsay, Danao City, about 3 a.m. when he was approached by Hermita who pretended to buy a sachet of shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride).

 
But Cababan noticed that Hermita was a policeman, said Gomez.

Cababan then ran inside his house while Hermita and the other policemen chased him, asking him to surrender, said Gomez.

But Cababan did not surrender and instead fired at the police men, hitting Hermita twice in the left arm.
