Tropical storm “Carina” (international name: Nida) maintained its strength after it made landfall in northern Cagayan, the state weather bureau said late Sunday afternoon.
Carina still packs maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 120 kph.
Moving at 20 kph in a north northwest direction, it is seen to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Monday morning.
Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 2 was raised over Isabela, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Apayao, Mt. Province, Ifugao, Kalinga, Abra, Cagayan and Babuyan Group of Islands.
Signal No. 1 was up over Batanes Group of Islands, Benguet, La Union, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija and Aurora.
Carina made landfall in Cagayan province at around 2 p.m.
The state weather bureau warned residents living in places under storm warning signals against flash floods.
“Areas under TCWS No. 1 and 2, Calabarzon, Mimaropa and the rest of Central Luzon are alerted against moderate to heavy rains which may trigger flash floods and landslides,” Pagasa said.
Several local governments have declared suspension of classes in their areas. AJH/JE/rga
