CDN bags two PPI awards

CEBU Daily News, a member of the Inquirer Group of Companies, won both the Best Editorial Page and the Best Edited Community Newspaper in the local daily categories of the 2015 Civic Journalism Community Press Awards of the Philippine Press Institute held at the Century Park Hotel Thursday night.

CDN beat the Mindanao Daily Times in both categories and also became a finalist for the Best Editorial Page for the Visayas along with the Bohol Chronicle. The paper was then handled last year by publisher and editor in chief Eileen Mangubat who left the paper in February this year.

Cebu Daily News was cited for “its excellent quality of writing and editing” and for “engaging its readers and encouraging them to participate in the marketplace of ideas to bring out the best and the brightest in the community” for the Best Edited Community Paper category.

It was also cited for “its well written, timely and relevant editorials that delve into urgent local issues; for the photos that depict the lives of the people in its community and the problems they face; for its clean layout, creative, well executed editorial cartoons and columnists who wrote on diverse topics and in the vernacular” in the Best Editorial Page for a local daily.

FEATURED STORIES

The awardees included The Freeman, which won Best in Environmental Reporting and was a finalist in the Best in Fisheries Reporting category; Sun.Star Davao, which won Best in Business and Economic Reporting and Best in Photojournalism awards for local daily; and Sun.Star Pampanga, for Best in Culture, Arts and History Reporting.

For the weekly newspaper category, the Baguio Midland Courier won the Best Edited Community Newspaper, Best Editorial Page and Best in Business and Economic Reporting; Pahayagang Balikas for Best in Environmental Reporting; Baguio Chronicle, Best in Photojournalism; and the Ilocos Times, Best in Culture, Arts and History Reporting Weekly category.
