FDA tells parents: Be wise, buy only safe school items
AS MILLIONS of students nationwide go back to school this week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reminded parents to be extra cautious in selecting and purchasing school supplies for their children.
In an advisory, the FDA issued guidelines to help consumers make wise choices when buying basic school items such as paste, crayons, lead pencils, watercolor, glue sticks, correction fluid, erasers, oil pastels, chalk and modeling clay.
Always read the labels
The FDA said it was important to always read the labels of school items and take note of the following details: The name and address of the manufacturer, distributor and importer; the warning or hazard symbols that appear on the packaging; and instructions to follow in case of an emergency caused by the incorrect use of the product.
In general, school supplies are relatively safe for children of all ages but there are a few items that can pose health and safety hazards, according to the agency.
It cited removable parts such as erasers on pencils that may turn into a potential choking hazard. On the other hand, glue and paints can be ingested by small children. “Thus, it is recommended that children be under adult supervision whenever they are using [these items],” said the FDA.
To ensure further the safety of children, it also recommended the following:
- Periodically check school supplies for breakage or wear and tear that may cause injury or other risks to the health and safety of the child.
- Buy school supplies only from reputable retailers or outlets to ensure the quality and safety of the products. This will also guarantee that in case of accidents or adverse health effects, the consumer can contact the retailer or return the product under the Consumer Act of the Philippines.
- Consult a doctor immediately in case of accidental ingestion or any adverse health effects while using school supplies.
“Consumers are encouraged to browse the FDA website at www.fda.gov.ph, to keep abreast [of information] regarding school supply-related updates,” the agency said.
