AS IT HAPPENS: Duterte, Robredo proclamation as President, VP

The beginning of a new era.

Congress, in a joint session on Monday, will proclaim Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Camarines Sur Representative Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo as the country’s President-elect and Vice President-elect.

Duterte and Robredo will be proclaimed as the 16th President and 14th Vice President of the Republic, respectively, after a three-day canvassing in the House of Representatives.

The pace of the canvassing of votes for Duterte and Robredo is said to be the fastest in recent memory.

The tough-talking mayor maintained that he will not be present in Monday’s proclamation rites, saying that in his 30 years in public service, he had not attended any proclamation ceremony.

He will, instead, have his lawyers to represent him.

Meanwhile, Robredo said that she will attend the proclamation. She earlier attended Mass at St. Peter’s Church for Leaders in Quezon City.
