5.5-magnitude quake jolts northern PH

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck off Laoag City at 12 noon Saturday and was felt in the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and Cagayan, state seismologists said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury from the quake that centered 49 kilometers southwest of Laoag City, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported.

It occurred at a depth of 41 kilometers.

Phivolcs earlier put the magnitude at 5.2.

The offshore tremor was felt at Intensity V in Laoag City, Pasuquin, Sarrat and Paoay in the province of Ilocos Norte and in Burgos town in Ilocos Sur.

In Vigan, Ilocos Sur, the tremor was felt at Intensity IV.

Intensity III hit Sinait, Ilocos Sur and Pamplona town in Cagayan province.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
