P22.4M worth of smuggled sugar seized in Zamboanga City
ZAMBOANGA CITY—Authorities seized some P22.4 million worth of smuggled refined white sugar off Barangay (village) Recodo here on Thursday evening.
Philippine Navy Commander Roy Vincent Trinidad, spokesperson of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao, said on Friday that the smuggled sugar—totaling around 7,000 sacks—was on a large boat, which was spotted and intercepted by a routine maritime patrol around 10 p.m.
“Upon questioning of the patron, it was learned that the said motor vessel was loaded with sugar and was reportedly from Sandakan. Coast Guard personnel, who were aboard the navy ships, directed the motor vessel to proceed to the city pier for documentation and proper disposition,” Trinidad said. RAM
