LONDON, United Kingdom—British police have arrested an elderly man on suspicion of murder after a fellow resident at a nursing home was shot dead.

The Press Association cited Essex Police as saying the victim was an 81-year-old woman.

The suspect was also reported to be in his 80s and related to the victim. Police did not name him, as is customary in Britain, where identities are protected unless charges are brought.

Authorities said the shooting Monday morning was at the Delamer House care home in Walton-on-the-Naze, 90 miles (145 kilometers) northeast of London.

The victim and the suspect are believed by police to have known each other. Police say forensic searches are underway and no other suspects are being sought.

Detectives said a revolver was found at the scene.

The home was closed off by police and the staff is refusing to comment.
