Woman accused of killing elderly partner

HE was advised by his children to leave her, but 79-year-old farmer Abundio Hernandez woudn’t ’t let her go.

Instead of living happily ever after, Hernandez, a widow, was found dead near his home in sitio Walug, barangay Poblacion in Badian town at past 6 a.m. yesterday.

His 29-year-old live-in partner Lydia Yunting was arrested by Badian police as she walked along a road leading to neighboring Alegria town.

Taken from her white shoulder bag was a bloodstained bolo.

She had lived with the old man for three months.Her neighbors told police that the farmer used to maul Yunting.

Yunting, who’s now detained at the police station, admitted to the crime and told the police that she just wanted to get even.

Murder chargers will be filed against the woman.

Police said it’s up to the court to decide whether she will undergo a psychiatric examination.

The slain farmer had two slash wounds on his forehead and a bloodied right eye that was bashed with a fist-sized stone.

He was survived by his three children.

The bloodied Hernandez was found by neighbors in a vacant farm lot five to eight meters from his house.

Senior Insp. Almirante Bacayo, Badian police chief, said a neighbor Bonifacio Torino told the police that he saw Yunting dragging Hernandez in the middle of the lot the night before.

Torino said he was surprised to see Hernandez the next day while he was fetching water from a faucet located 10 to 15 meters outside his house.

“She (Yunting) doesn’t answer questions clearly,” Bacayo said in Cebuano.

“When she (Yunting) was arrested, she told us that she killed Hernandez because Hernandez took her rice pot,” PO2 William Beltran of the Badian police told Cebu Daily News in Cebuano. Correspondent Rhea Ruth V. Rosell
