2 dead fishermen, 2 others in ‘critical condition’ found in Quezon

LUCENA CITY—Four fishermen, two of them dead and two others barely conscious, were found on board a fishing boat from Masbate that drifted into the seas off Mulanay town in Quezon province early Thursday.

Senior Superintendent Ronaldo Genaro Ylagan, Quezon police chief, said the Mulanay police reported that the victims were found by coastal residents near the shoreline of Barangay (village) Sta. Rosa at around 5 a.m.

He said four persons were in the boat, however, two of them were already dead.

They fatalities were identified as Efimaco Yanson and Ferdinand Buhawi. The survivors, Ramier Buhawi, the brother of Ferdinand, and Rodrigo Lampago Cabaqui, told police they were from Barangay Mababang Baybay, Claveria, Masbate.

In a phone interview with Inspector Liezl Abenilla, Mulanay police station deputy chief, she said the survivors told police that their fishing boat were already close to the shore of Claveria on Tuesday when it was pushed back to the sea by the strong waves spawned by typhoon “Nona.”

“According to the survivors, the boat drifted for three days on the high seas,” Abenilla said.

She said survivors were found in “critical condition” and were immediately transferred in a hospital in Lucena City after receiving emergency treatment in a clinic in Mulanay.

Abenilla said that the remains of the fatalities were brought to a funeral home in Mulanay. RAM
