BANSALAN, Davao del Sur—A still unidentified gunman shot dead a businessman here, who was running for councilor under the Liberal Party (LP) around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Chief Insp. Adrian Antonio, the town police chief, said that businessman Domingo Isip was about to enter his house on Dalia St. in Barangay (village) Poblacion Uno when shot by the suspect.
Antonio said the victim had come from the cockpit arena, along with his driver, when the incident took place.
Isip was hit on the left portion of his face and the back portion of his body and died on the spot. However, the businessman’s driver, identified as Joel Caballero, was unscathed, he said.
The suspect had fled on a waiting motorcycle driven by another unidentified man, Antonio said.
Antonio said the police were still investigating the incident and that among the angles being looked into was politics.
However, re-electionist Mayor Edwin Reyes, who is the LP’s standard-bearer here, said he believed that Isip’s killing had nothing to do with the elections.
He said he was more inclined to believe that the incident was business-related.
Aside from managing the local cockpit arena, Isip also reportedly lent money to various individuals. RAM
