Bad weather brought out the best in Manila policemen whose good deeds have been recognized by the local government.

In a meeting with the city’s police on Monday, Mayor Alfredo Lim cited the Manila Traffic District Enforcement Unit and the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau, which kept at their jobs despite the rains and floods brought about by Typhoon Pedring.

Manila Police District Station 7 commander Superintendent Ernesto Barlam was commended for helping clear the roads of fallen trees and electric posts even as the typhoon raged.

Using Barlam as example, Lim said station commanders should take the lead in hands-on public service.

“Your men will be too embarrassed to seek shelter or to be inactive if they see that you are on the move,” Lim told police officials.

The police were also told to provide vehicles to be able to ride through floodwaters so they would be able to extend ferry services to stranded commuters.

“This will have an impact when people see your concern in times of need. They anticipate police action,” Lim said.

At the flag ceremony on Monday, Lim also thanked the Manila Fire Department and Army reservists assigned to the city for their visibility and ready assistance during Pedring.
