Vice President Jejomar Binay on Monday said he would push for a moratorium on the filing of corruption cases at least a year before the elections so these could not be used for harassment.

In his speech before members of the National Unity Party (NUP) in its convention at Sofitel on Monday, Binay said candidates usually faced corruption charges ahead of elections.

He said corruption complaints before the Ombudsman were prematurely elevated to the Sandiganbayan so that the official could be placed under preventive suspension ahead of the elections.

“Sa darating na halalan, kapag kalaban, tinatakot na ihahabla sa Ombudsman, at ano mang kaso sa Ombudsman, pipilitin i-akyat sa Sandiganbayan para magkaroon ng preventive suspension,” Binay said.

“There should be a moratorium of one year. Sa magkakandidato, wala munang hablaan, para walang tinatakot,” he added.

Ahead of his presidential bid, Binay himself faces a graft investigation with his son Makati Mayor Junjun for the alleged overprice of the Makati Parking Building II and the Makati Science Highschool Building during their terms as Makati mayor.

Mayor Binay was suspended for six months pending the Ombudsman investigation on the alleged graft charges.

Vice President Binay vowed that his administration would not be like the present Aquino administration, which he accused of selective justice and vindictiveness.

“‘Yung administrasyon ko po, would be a unifying and healing administration. Tama na po ang vindictiveness… The rule of law would prevail, hindi natin magiging karanasan itong selective justice,” Binay said, eliciting applause from the audience.
