SAN PEDRO CITY—A woman and a police officer were killed by motorcycle-riding robbers in Cabuyao City, Laguna, past noon on Friday.
Supt. Joseph Bayan, the city police chief, said the incident took place at around 12:50 p.m. in front of a convenience store along national highway in Barangay San Isidro.
He identified the victims as Brenda Broqueza and Police Officer 1 Seigfred Angeles of the Cabuyao police.
In a phone interview, Bayan said Broqueza was on a motorycle driven by her partner Amador Arena.
The couple had just come from a nearby Metrobank branch and were on their way home after withdrawing some P400,000 in cash.
“They had to slow down due to the slow traffic somewhere near (the) 7-Eleven (convenience store) and that was when the woman was held at gunpoint by a suspect on board another motorcycle,” Bayan said.
Broqueza refused to give up her bag containing the money, which prompted one of the robbers to shoot her and snatch her bag, Bayan said, quoting witnesses.
Patrolling policemen happened to be in the area, prompting a brief gun exchange. The gunmen opened fire and hit Angeles. They then escaped to unknown directions.
Broqueza and Angeles were rushed to a hospital in the adjacent city of Calamba but both died of several gunshot wounds.
Bayan said witnesses saw at least five robbers—two on a motorcycle that attacked the couple and three more on another motorcycle.
