“No destructive Pacific-wide threat exists based on the historical and tsunami data,” Phivolcs said in an advisory.
It added that earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within 100 kilometers of the epicenter.
The earthquake in Santa Cruz Islands was recorded at 6:49 a.m. Philippine time.
“There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from the earthquake,” Phivolcs said. IDL
