Aquino appoints new Court of Appeals justice

MANILA, Philippines–President Benigno Aquino III has filled up the position vacated by Court of Appeals Associate Justice Amelita Tolentino who retired last year.

On Monday, the Supreme Court has received the transmittal letter from Malacañang appointing Quezon City Regional Trial Court Judge Germano Francisco Legaspi to the Court of Appeals.

Among the cases he handled is the bid of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) to lift the Quezon City government’s ban to hold rally near Batasang Pambansa Complex during Aquino’s State of the Nation Address (Sona) in 2013.

Legaspi also dismissed the appeal filed by Marlene Aguilar-Pollard, younger sister of singer Freddie Aguilar and mother of road rage murder suspect Jason Ivler, to dismiss the obstruction of justice case filed against her.

Other candidates who vied for the post are Judge Geraldine Fiel-Macaraig of the Marikina RTC Branch 192; Judge Ronaldo Martin of the Antipolo RTC Branch 73; Judge Ruben Reynaldo de Guzman Roxas of the Manila RTC Branch 12; Judge Jeoffre Acebedo of the Cagayan de Oro City Branch 41; and Judge Perpetua Atal-Paño of the Makati RTC Branch 134.
