1 dead, 19 hurt in Bilibid blast

MANILA, Philippines – An inmate was killed and at least 19 were hurt in an explosion that rocked the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) Thursday morning.

Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director Franklin Jesus Bucayu identified the fatality as Jojo F. Fampo, while R-Jay Lacdan and Alvin Cruz were seriously injured and brought to the Ospital ng Muntinlupa for further medical treatment.

The explosion occurred at 9:55 a.m., minutes before a command conference, near Building 5 at the area of Barangay Commando.

BuCor, which oversees seven national penitentiaries including the NBP, is conducting an investigation into the incident.

The National Bureau of Investigation and the Explosive Ordnance Division of Muntinlupa police are also conducting post-blast investigation, Bucayu said in a text message.

Bucayu believed the blast is related to the intensified raid being conducted by the government inside NBP.

He said they conducted three more operations and seized a cache of firearms, including grenades.
