Naga City’s river overflows, floods villages
LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – Rains that have been pouring without letup since Friday brought by Typhoon “Ruby” caused Naga River, a tributary of Bicol River, to overflow and flood surrounding villages in Naga City, the mayor said Monday.
Naga City Mayor John Bongat said Naga River overflowed Sunday evening after “Ruby” made its second landfall in Masbate that also brought heavy rains in other Bicol areas.
Knee-high flood affected the villages along the riverbanks of Naga River but no one was harmed since residents in these areas have all been evacuated between Friday and Saturday, the mayor said.
Bongat said the city earlier evacuated an estimated 2,000 families, corresponding to 8,000 persons, in all 27 barangays (villages) of Naga City in anticipation of floods.
He said they planned to send the evacuees back home Monday afternoon as the flood has started receding earlier.
But classes in all levels remained suspended until Tuesday, Bongat said.
