‘Mario’ death toll reaches 16; damage nears P1B

MANILA, Philippines—The death toll from tropical storm “Mario” (international name: Fung-Wong) climbed to 16 five days after it drenched Luzon, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.

In its bulletin posted early Wednesday, the NDRRMC verified that four more were killed in separate drowning incidents.

They were identified as Federico Nilo, 60-years-old, from Luna, La Union; Ardon Gababel, 48-years-old, from Magsaysay, Occidental Mindoro; Glenn Baturi, six-years-old, from Candon City, Ilocos Sur; and Amber Javier, three-months-old, from Sta. Cruz, Laguna.

On Tuesday, NDRRMC reported that 12 had been killed when “Mario” intensified the effects of the lingering southwest monsoon and delivered heavy rains over Luzon.

“Mario” also caused P907,170,093, with the agriculture sector taking the biggest losses with P563,492,413 worth of damages, while the infrastructure sector incurred P343,677,680 worth of losses.

NDRRMC added that “Mario” has affected 264,530 families or 1,181,709 persons in 1,224 barangays in 27 provinces across the regions of Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, Bicol, Cordillera, Central Visayas and Metro Manila.

“Mario” also destroyed 426 houses while damaging 1,963 more.

Also, 14,540 families, or 61,670 people are still staying in 260 evacuation centers.
